The rapper Kate Tempest gets it from all sides of applause and find, nevertheless, that you fail constantly. Now they released a new Album. And reveals why she has good ideas sometimes.
Kate Tempest is for the current Pop is a kind of Frankenstein’s Monster. She is a feminist, politically, without make-up, presentable, poetry and Hip-Hop, Banksy, and Wordsworth – and, in particular, is also good.
Tempest is, you at least always, the “voice of a Generation”. It would be really for any award as the “voice of a Generation” a new Generation of – the earth would have a serious Problem. They would, tired of the Pop people last, out of its orbit into the universe of a spin.
right there, in the universe, begins the new Album “Let Them Eat Chaos,” the 30-Year-old from the English Brockley: with a Zoom from space to London by night. We have taken the rapper and author for an Interview in Berlin.
SZ.de: Missing you actually sometimes to be criticized? You can read their reviews at all?
Kate Tempest: no, I don’t read them. Because if you’re the kind of Person that praise takes, you have to be able to work with negativity. Both can cause harm to your state of mind. You must not be too much to get into it, how things are recorded. I love it, too, because that is a very real way of finding out how your work is received.
In a sense, praise is much more dangerous than blame, because it makes dependent. Many artists are addicted to praise and get into trouble, when it stops.
This is a very interesting point, because negative Feedback can drive – you want to prove it to you. Praise puts the brakes on against me, I feel like my Job would be done.
watch, therefore, not as the “voice of her Generation”?
no. On the one hand, it is great to be able to talk to people. I mean, this is a dream we all have: that our work reaches someone. But on the other hand, I would create prefer new things to talk about than the things I’ve done already.
The history that you have left school at 16, is wrong, right?
I’ve probably not told anyone that I went to class. But I studied, I went to music school, I was in night school. It’s so strange when you realize that someone has to tell a story about you. Because the reality is always much more interesting. And more and more complex.
Why you went?
I didn’t come along well. I was cared for in an area that was separated from the other students, for children with behavior disorders. The area in which it is locked, the children did not know where you are, what you should do with them. I was bored of it all. I was a nightmare.
is the history that you had an Operation that changed her voice, or is that just a rumor?
I rap since I was 15. I had a Phase in which I always and everywhere rapped. Without a microphone, in a room full of people, screaming. At parties, political demonstrations, in the middle of the night on the road. I had never been trained to use my voice. Also, I drank so much, smoked, and am still awake. There was this point where I was in the Studio, and I suddenly the voice dropped out. After that, I had an Operation and had to remain silent for three weeks. I couldn’t sneeze, don’t cough, don’t laugh.
