Kate Tempest: New Album Let Them Eat Chaos – MIRROR ONLINE

sleep is the new Must-Have, the “Guardian” wrote recently. As a rapper, lyricist and writer Kate Tempest always on the side of the Have-Nots, it is only fitting, to whom you devoted yourself to your new Album: the Sleepless.

It is 4.18 am in a street with no name somewhere in London, and seven residents of this street can’t sleep. They are called Gemma, Esther, Alicia, Pete, Bradley, Zoe, and Pious, they are nurses, the unemployed, the PR guys, and you will be kept awake by anxiety, alcohol, Overwork. Even those who have financially taken care of, not like to imagine the next Morning. “My future looks bright, but my past wants me to the collar,” “Ketamine for Breakfast,” Gemma’s Song.

“Behind me are some years full of debuts,” says Kate Tempest at the Interview at the end of may in Berlin. Tempest is in the city, to her first novel, “What you present you will be able to leave”. He is the literary treatment of the substance, the you already have in your critically acclaimed debut album “Everybody Down” of 2014 in song form presented. A few days later, her first collection of poems, “Hold Your Own” appears in German.

“I’ve tried to put me with the various projects, a Foundation, so that the next Work, the next decade of strong structures to build,” says Tempest. “The novel marks the end of something very Significant that has taken place over a very long time in my life, both on a personal and artistic level. Now I have new oxygen in the brain.”

plant cycle is a strict word, one that would connect more with classical music or painting. But none of the contemporary artist, it could fit better than Tempest. With a wide point of view, the sticks still nothing Calculated, she has clocked her work over several years and the various creative disciplines. In January, the texts appear to be of the “Let Them Eat Chaos”, together form a row of the long poem in the book, and then a new piece of theatre, a new collection of poems, and then the next Album.

“It seems to be a kind of malaise wide shut, as soon as you realize that an artist capable of more than you initially thought,” says Tempest on their experiences with how people on the first bundle of their Work have responded. “For me, the expression of the commodification of art is – it’s just a matter in what Department, in one Store, so that it can find the people and buy.”

Europe is lost

For all its virtuosity, which has reached Tempest on the various media, it is appearance, nevertheless, the Live Performance, where their talent is most noticeable. As in the Interview as a guard and likeable, but not necessarily fruitful conversation partner shows Tempest later at the book launch in Berlin’s concert Venue Lido. She is trying, visibly, to the round with a presenter and actress, reads from the German Translation. But, as she begins the furios-breathless prologue from “What you recite you can” leave, Tempests electrifying energy significantly.

she takes the stage as excessive space for its figurative language and its unique Presentation style. She works with the art, pauses and emphasis; often, it sounds like you would nachhorchen an Echo, the even larger rooms to produce than the already large theatres and concert halls, the fills you in the meantime. Their themes and style were not so accessible, one would have to call this mode majestic.

On their debut album “Everybody Down” was pressed, sometimes the music to the edge. In the case of “Let Them Eat Chaos” has changed the relationship of language and music noticeably. Already the Track “Europe is Lost”, in November 2015, published, worked with his scratchy guitar and his catchy Industrial Beat as a Single. To these qualities of Songs like the The-Streets-like “Whoops” and the longing slow jam “Grubby on close”.

From the space into the bedroom

“When my producer, Dan Carney and I ‘Everybody Down’, we knew us very well,” says Tempest in a second interview at the end of August on the phone, “Let Them Eat Chaos” is finished. The long tour that followed the debut album, had Carney and however. “Our ways of thinking have started to synchronize. Dan understands, probably better than I, how the artistic process works for me – and I understand it better than he, how it works with him. Dan knows that I sometimes have to knock off 30 minutes of Freestyle stuff out of which he can then use for maybe only two minutes.”

the music works on the “Let Them Eat Chaos” is better and the Songs are self-employed, is also due to the change in the structure of the album. In “Everybody Down,” he said to Tempest about all zwölfs Tracks across the story of Pete, Becky and Harry. On “Let Them Eat Chaos” make up the majority of the Songs now, single portraits of the sleepless. A door-to-door, then Tempest is already in the bedroom of Bradley, Pious or Gemma, and looks with them nervously at the clock, always showing 4.18 PM.

This kind of linguistic zoom through the entire Album. It literally starts with a view of the world, then Tempest puts the focus ever more closely, until he lies on a street in London, in which the seven main characters live, but nothing is know about each other. If the Songs don’t make clear what point of view the Tempest the world has, shows it on the Cover: The Globe is depicted in black-and-white, half of it is a city. You is in flames.

So much their albums narrative differ, but they have a substantive Overlap: Pete. Of the unemployed, of the white start to “Everybody Down” nothing to do with his talents and with his jealousy of his girlfriend, will scare and in the novel version of the Story, also love for competition by her own sister. Now he is alone again and has his drug problem even less grip than before. “Oh, Pete, the poor fool,” said Tempest, laughing on the phone. Then she pushes serious afterwards: “Pete is very close to my heart. I hope that he finds a little peace.”

Whether he succeeds? At the end of “Let Them Eat Chaos,” in the next to last Song “the Breaks”, breaks out a huge storm, a tempest that rocked the circumstances, the rule in question and the power of your protagonist on the street with no name, “seven broken hearts, seven blank faces”. You can see in the eyes, to call out to your bafflement about the unleashed forces of nature. You might recognize how similar you are, in your insomnia, and in their humanity.
