The music pioneer Dieter Moebius died at the age of 71 years, as his former band-partner Michael Rother announced on Facebook. “Our friend, neighbor and colleague died this morning,” wrote Rother. “We will all miss him very much. Our thoughts are with his wife Irene.”
For more details as the cause of death or of death he did not name. Rother and Moebius had played together in the band Harmonia.
Hans-Joachim Roedelius confirmed on the Facebook page of the band cluster the death of his longtime musical partner.
Moebius was born in Switzerland in 1944 and studied art in Brussels and in West Berlin, where he co-founded the Krautrock movement. Their style is decisively influenced by synthesizer sounds and minimalist arrangements.
Moebius made together with Hans-Joachim Roedelius first group clusters, together with Rother she later founded the band Harmonia. The group was particularly active in the 70s. Cluster existed until 2010.
Moebius once said that the Berlin student rebellion had inspired him. He was often seen in the 60s during demonstrations as a music studio. Moebius had been trained as a child in classical music. But after hearing the rocker Chuck Berry and later the band The Velvet Underground, he changed his music style.
