Out of nowhere Brad Pitt crashes as an American elite soldier on the German opponents – and massacred him with a knife. The prelude is clear: It is cruel, and grace does not exist. Two hours takes the blood dripping tour de force of a US tank unit through West Germany, still resisting in April 1945 in the Nazi units. It is an archaic world War Western with shooting Army Cowboys.
Action director David Ayer (“Street Kings”) focuses on the war scenes. Relentlessly he leaves the tank shells rain down on infantry soldiers, inexorably he lets living and the dead by tanks roll over and crush. Burn soldiers, civilians are torn apart in the bombing. The film crew was able to draw from the solid while shooting this repulsive war apocalypse – rarely seen the Endkriegsdeutschland on the big screen in such a detailwütigen precision adjusted
rape turns into love romance
The historical. Background yet not one of the strengths of the film – that “Heart of Steel” will be presented in the introduction and in Werbefilmchen as authentic, is more of a nuisance, finally it acts in its pathetic tone and black-and-white figures, more like a good semi-fictional Comic.
The historical painting is just crumbling facade in the work. That five US soldiers are fighting a losing battle as short end of the war in West Germany against a superior force of 300 well equipped Nazi henchmen of the Waffen-SS, fits into a modern Western plot, but not in the history books. A deferred rape is changing swiftly getting on a tender love story -. This representation is also likely to cause worry lines not only for historians
It’s about anger at the enemy
The best moments develop the filmmakers then when the guns are silent. In sharp contrast to the thundering noise of battle prevails in the lulls between a sometimes downright eerie silence. Tank commander Collier (Pitt) enters with his troops in an apartment where they serve food. With great difficulty and with a tired look he keeps his troops from against the fearful civilians doing violence. The silence during the meal, and the truncated looks of physically or intact, mentally crippled long-servicemen are vividly staged.
The American original, the film is called “Fury”, translated anger or rage. It’s about anger at the enemy, but also anger at himself – to unleashed fury with which the world is lifted off the rails
